Road Movie – a fantasy by Les Merton

A car is a car – a stolen car is something else –
a fantasy in its own right: freedom, with wheels
to burn and an illuminated speedo that will hit
a ton fifty in a smooth foot to floor movement.

A girl is a girl – a hitch hiking girl is something else –
a fantasy in her own right: thumbing opportunity
with an I want a ride smile, that will tempt
riding into the sunset into looking for lay-bys.

A road is a road – an infinite road is something else –
a fantasy in its own right: going into the unknown
beyond dreams, previous experience, stimulating
a reason for living in days without end.

A movie is a movie – a road movie is something else –
a fantasy in its own right: black and white images
storytelling flickers, highs and lows, plot planned
to climax in ninety seven minutes with, I told you so.

A crash is a crash – a deliberate crash is something else –
a fantasy in its own right: togetherness for ever.
Two dead bodies in a burnt out stolen car
and a newspaper epitaph, Unexplainable Accident.
